Being Poor For Christ

“BEING POOR AND STAYING POOR” FOR CHRIST’S SAKE
IS THIS JUST A MATTER OF POVERTY?

A rich ruler wanted to know how to inherit eternal life.  He questioned the good teacher Jesus for an answer. Jesus simply told him that only GOD IS GOOD.  This GOOD GOD gave laws to be obeyed.  The rich ruler kept some laws.  He probably thought he kept them all.  Jesus told him to give his riches to the poor to receive treasures in heaven and to follow Him.  The man was unwilling and went away grieved (Mk. 10:22) and very sad (Lk.18:23).  Does one have to give up riches or great riches to inherit eternal life?  Isn’t the rich man favoured by God who bestows on him material blessings?  Since it is impossible for the rich to enter the kingdom of God, what chances are there available for the enquiring poor disciples who do not have much, let alone great riches, to give away?

For the rich ruler, money was his first love (Mk. 10.24).  He placed his riches above God.  He violated the first and greatest Commandment (love God).  He preferred his love for great riches.  Wealth was his idol.  There is nothing wrong with being rich.  God gives us wealth.  Abraham, Job, David and Jacob among many others were wealthy.  In fact, many have followed Jesus and He gave no call to them to give up their riches in following Him.  When wealth increases, we do not set our heart on them.  Wealth and effort over time can help us build treasures in heaven. Wealth can help us keep Commandment No. 8 (stealing) in check.  Agur in Prov. 30 prayed for contentment with “enough” so that he will not forget about God and also not have to steal.  The ruler could have asked Jesus for more faith, help in his unbelief and agree to follow Jesus.  His riches was mentioned to reveal to him where his love really was and his inability to fulfil God’s laws.

The decision to walk away from God continues to be a choice for many who through the ages continue to trust first in riches.  It need not be that way for us.  With God all things are possible.  It is possible for Him in His mercy and grace to save all rich persons who will come and trust in Jesus Christ.  They will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit to help them overcome all their bad earthly desires.
